Acoustic Door: How do we measure this performance?

When we want to rank the level of acoustic insulation, we use a single-number rating. The calculation is standardized and included in the norm. The single-number value actually comprises three elements and is calculated as follows: Rw (C; Ctr).

Rw: The R-spectrum is reduced to a single-number rating at 500Hz (the weighted sound reduction index)

C: Spectral adaptation term for sources of mainly mid- to high-frequency sound

Ctr: Spectral adaptation term for sources of mainly mid- to low-frequency sound

In addition to lab measurements, acoustic performance can also be assessed through on-site measurements using DnTw values, expressed in decibels. These values indicate the acoustic performance of the entire wall and are more complex than lab-based values, as they are influenced by environmental factors.

Acoustic Test (in the lab)

The test specimen is realistically installed between a completely separated transmitting and receiving room. Subsequently, dominant sound transmission is conducted through the test specimen. The purpose of this measurement is to determine the sound reduction index (referred to as Rw and expressed in decibels) of the joinery installed in the acoustic chambers. This index enables the determination of airborne sound insulation performance of a building element or system. A higher Rw value indicates better insulation performance.
